Artificial Boxwood has many crafting uses during the holiday season. Green walls, privacy screens, photo backdrops, movie sets and corporate events are just a few. One of the most fun of these projects and the most timely is the use of the artificial boxwood to create cone shaped Christmas trees. The indoor mats are now very low priced and look really good. The outdoor boxwood and artificial foliage material is great for setting nativity scenes and placing a few trees in the yard. This project has been getting a lot of action because it is fun and somewhat challenging. One needs to decide how big and what shape the cone is. Then calculating the surface area of the cone(Pi x radius x side) is another challenge. For this project we are going to make our cones 40 inches high and make the uprights 32 inches each. This leaves 44 for the side. An 18 inch base means the material required for the cone surface is Pi(3.14) x radius (9) x 44. This leaves 1,244 square inches or 8.6 square feet. Boxwood mats from Geranium Street are 24×16 or 2.5 square feet, thus this project requires 4 boxwood mats. Since they come in packs of 10 it is good to go ahead and plan on making two trees.
